Step 1 Revision
1 Check the new words and expressions inLessons 10 and 11. Ask the Ss which of them come from American English.
2 Get the Ss to tell you about the historyof the English language. Ask some questions to help them, using those in WbLesson 10 as a guide.
Step 2 Preparation for reading
SB Lesson 11, Part 1. Ask the Ss to readthe passage and make a list of all the American English words that arementioned in the passage. Then check the answers with the whole class (cent,Florida, howl, cookbook). It is not necessary to get the Ss to learn thesewords (except cent, which is a one-syllabi word).
Go through the passage and deal with anylanguage problems that arise.
a cent = one hundredth of a dollar (thesmallest unit of American money)
You may wish to ask the Ss if they know anyEnglish words used in Chinese (e.g. guitar, jeep, modem, romantic, etc.)
Step 3 Language study
SB Lesson 11, Part 2. Tell the Ss Look atthe sentences in Part 2. What are the differences between the sentences in thefirst column and those in the second column ? Help the Ss to answer (in thesecond column, we use He/She said, the verb in Indirect Speech moves one tenseback into the past, and pronouns are changed as necessary.)
Point out the tense system:
The Present Indefinite Tense becomes theSimple Past. The Present Continuous becomes the Past Continuous.
The Simple Past becomes the Past Perfect.The Present Perfect becomes the Past Perfect. The Future Indefinite becomes theFuture-in-the Past When we use He/She says, the verb stays the same.
Step 4 Controlled practice
Give the Ss a drill, like this:
T: I like dancing.
Ss: You said you liked dancing.
T: I am reading a book.
Ss: You said you were reading a book (etc.)
Remember to use a variety of tenses. Youcould also get a student to give a sentence and the Ss reply He/She said….
Step 5 Practice
SB Lesson 11, Part 3. Do the first three orfour sentences orally with the class. Point out that, in some sentences, thereporting phrase is He/She said that.... "that" is optional, bat isoften used before a word that is not a pronoun. Then let the Ss work alone,writing the answers in their exercise books. They can check their answers inpairs. Finally, check the answers orally with the whole class. See if the Sscan guess the meaning of any new words and phrases, such as have somedifficulties with pronunciation.

3 He said that a great many place names inthe States were Spanish.
4 He said he had always been interested ingeography.
5 She explained that at the beginning ofthis century a great many Europeans had gone to live in the USA.

Step 6 Workbook
Wb Lesson 11, Exx. 1 and 2 should be doneorally in class.
Get the Ss to fill in the blanks in Ex. 1in class, but write down the answers to Ex. 2 in the exercise book.
Step 7 Consolidation
Revise the instructions for formingIndirect Speech. Repeat the drill in Step 4 of this lesson.
Homework
Complete the Workbook exercises.
Do Ex. 2 in the exercise book.
