Check the homework exercises. Revisethe contents of the passage in SB Lesson 6. See if the Ss can tell you aboutthe passage with their books closed!
Step 2 Preparation for reading
SBLesson 7, Part 1. Ask the Ss Why do people smoke? Teach the word drugusing Chinese. Ask What other drugs do you know? Ask the Ss to read thepassage quickly to find the answer to this question What is the name of thedrug in cigarettes? (Nicotine.)
Step 3 Reading
Askthe Ss Why can‘t people stop smoking? Let the Ss read the passagecarefully to find the answer (Nicotine is a drug that gets one into the habitof smoking). Go through the passage with the Ss and discuss the information init. Check to see if the Ss understand it. Deal with any language points.

Step4 Discussion
SBPage 10, Part 2. Teach the new word cancer and explain (in Chinese ifnecessary) that cancer is a very common cause of death among smokers. (Lungcancer is the most common form, but smokers may get cancer of the throat, mouthor other parts of body, too.) Divide the class into groups of four. Go throughQuestions 1-4 explaining what they have to do for each question. Then let thegroups discuss these questions. Ask them for their answers/opinions at the endof this stage. Answers: 1A>B>C 4 all true Then read through Questions5-7. Explain that nonsmoking areas are areas where smoking is notallowed. Let the groups discuss these questions. Ask them for their answers /opinions at the end of this stage.
Step 5 Language study
SB Page 11, Part 3. Writethe two example sentences on the Bb and revise the use of Noun Clauses as theObject and Predicative. Point out that in the Object Clause that isoptional, but in the Predicative Clause that is necessary and cannot beomitted.
Step 6 Practice
SBPage 11, Part 4. This exercise helps the Ss to grasp the use of Noun Clauses asObject and Predicative. Give one or two examples to make sure the Ss know howto do the exercise before they work in pairs, e. g.. Many smokers know(that) smoking tobacco causes illnesses. That is because the tobacco companieswant to remain in business. Tell the Ss that they may make as manysentences as possible. At the end of this activity ask some pairs to act outbefore the class.
Step 7 Practice
SBPage 11, Part 5. The aim of mis‘ exercise is help the Ss to understand thedifference between the two phrases be used to and used to. Be used tomeans to be accustomed to, used to is used for expressing the habits orstates that existed in the past and have now ceased. First let the Ss workalone. Then check the answers with the whole class. Answers:

Ex. 1 helps consolidate whatis taught in Lessons 6 and 7. While getting the Ss to do it in pairs, ask oneof them to write down the answers to the first two questions on the Bb. Thencheck the answers with the whole class. Ex. 2 should be done in pairs first,then in class. After finishing Ex. 3, translate the sentences into Chinese.
