There are a number of phrasesbuilt on the word “put”, among which is the

People who try to put you on are more often justjoking, having some pleasant friendly fun. There are people who like to playpractical jokes on friends, to put them on in strange ways, some funny, somenot. This is especially true on April 1st, April Fool’s Day. Yearafter year, numbers of people let themselves be fooled by the same joke. Theyjust forget what had happened to them the year before. One of these oftenrepeated jokes is a telephone call. The caller changes his voice and tells hisfriend a certain Mr. Fox calls you and asks you to make a quick reply to thegiven number, which is the telephone number of the National Zoo.

Unthinkingly, the friend quickly makes his call andasks for Mr. Fox.

The man on the other end says: “Who?”

“Mr. Fox. I don’t know his first name. Pleasehurry?”

The man at the other end answers: “We have no Mr.Fox here.” Then he realizes it is a joke and one he has heard before. And hebegins to laugh and says: “Look, friend, this is the zoo. Somebody is pullingyour leg, putting you on.”

“Good God!” you say to yourself: “What an idiot Iam!” But you think about it and you can’t help having a good laugh overit.

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr Kleitman has a new explanation. He hasproved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labour through your work you may say thatyou’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is whenyour cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comesduring the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No onehas discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues(自言自语)as: “Get up,John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the troubleis that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much familyquarreling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your lifefit it better. Habit can help, Dr Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in theevening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to someextent(程度) by habitually staying up later than you want to.If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do earlyin the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, butyou’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a yawn (哈欠) and stretch.Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor.Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the nightbefore. Whenever possible, do dairy work in the afternoon and save tasksrequiring more energy or concentration(集中) for your sharper hours.

60.If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably______________.

    A. he is a lazy person

    B. he refuses to follow his own energy cycle

    C. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening

    D. he is not sure when his energy is low

    A. Having no idea of energycycles.

    B .Familiar monologues.

    C. A change in a family member’s energy cycle.

    D. Attempts control the energy of other family members.

What makes a good school? Many people would agree that a good school isone that gets the best out of its pupils. Yet not every pupil can get straightas in his or her exams. What is most important is the individual development ofthe child and not the general academic success of the school. Yet how can thisbe measured and improvements made? This question has been at the heartof my work for the last 20 years. All the facts shows that the quality of anindividual school can make a significant difference to its pupils’ prospects (前途) in life. Mydefinition(定义) of a good school is one in which students progressfurther than might be expected considering their social background. Inner-cityschool, for example, despite receiving many socially-disadvantaged pupils, canstill be successful in encouraging their students to progress.

Weshould recognize that the effectiveness of a school can only be considered inrelation to its typical intake(吸入量). Researchers have discovered a number of factorscommonly connected with good schools. There are few surprises among acollection which includes professional leadership, high expectations, and aconcentration on teaching and learning. Recognition of the importance ofpupils’ rights and responsibilities and parental involvement is also important.
