PART TWO PART TWO
Part Two of the Writing Test paper will require you to produce a longer piece of writing. You may be instructed to write a memo, a letter, notes, a message, an advertisement or one or two pages in a diary. The length of this piece of writing should be between 100 and 200 words. Again, however, you will not be expected to write addresses and dates in your letters, memos, etc in this part of the test.
The writing task is usually based on a text which may take the form of a simple table or graph, a diary extract, a programme, a fax, a memo or a letter (sometimes with comments written on it). Sometimes there may be two texts (eg a loner and a fax) on which you must base your writing task. In each case, you will be expected to give certain pieces of information, according to the instructions you have been given. The writing task itself will usually take the form of a letter, a longer memo, a fax, or a report.
As in Part One, your role is explained to you in the instructions, and the identity and role of the person to whom you are writing is given. Again, always address your memo, fax or letter to the person mentioned in the instructions (eg Dear Mr Wang) but don't include any other details such as an address or a date. Don't waste time counting every word in your letter, etc. Simply count the number of words on 3 lines which you have written. Divide the number by 3 to find the average number of words on a line. Then simply multiply this figure by the number of lines you have written. Try to be clear and concise in your writing but, above all, don't worry if you have written too
much.
You are advised not to write a rough draft and then spend time neatly writing out a fair copy. Try to write the letter carefully straight away for the purpose of this test, thus saving valuable time. If you do write a rough copy first, however, make sure that you have enough time to do this and to copy ft out.
The following is an example of this kind of writing task:-
You are an assistant manager in a large textiles company consisting of two small office buildings and four large factories. You have been asked to obtain information about the re-painting of your company's premises. You
have now contacted three paint companies, each of which manufacture their own paint and will send their own team of decorators to do the work you require.
Your company wants the painting to be done quickly to avoid as much disruption as possible (once work has started)., However, it is also keen for the work to be done using good-quality paints at as low a price as possible.
Read the following table you have drawn up. It shows the information you have collected about the three paint companies.
